Following population growth and the return of a number of DED’s from Galway West to Mayo, the Electoral Commission decided that Mayo should once again be a five seat constituency and that the boundaries of the constituency be the county boundaries.
One of the effects of this will be to lower the quota required to win a seat.
The quota is calculated as follows :
((Total Valid Poll / (The Number of seats + 1)) +1
This means that the Valid Poll in the 2024 election will be divided by 6 (5 seats + 1). In 2020 the Total Valid Poll was divided by 5 (4 seats +1)
It is difficult to project what the quota actually will be as it will depend on the turnout (number of votes cast), however the quota could fall by anything up to 2,000 voted from the 2020 quota of 12,871.
